One Disadvantage of a DP

Doing my research last year for our second MH, I read a lot about the pros and cons of gassers and diesels, but I don't remember anyone mentioning this.

It can get real expensive when you back into a tree.

  • Well another disadvantage is parking a 40 footer and the compatibility of many parks for them. Also many parks have 30 amp only, when most DP's are 50. Another disadvantage is the up front cost. Easily one can START you at $300k new. There's still some good gassers at $70k new.

But with all this said, we have 3 rv's. A Class A bounder, A Toyota Class C, and a KZ travel trailer. We ARE shopping around for a DP and wanting to get rid of the KZ and Bounder. :)

Why? Well there's TONS of advantages to a DP. :)

Sooner or later we all have that :S moment it is not RV specific. Don't ask me how I know.

  • And with the gassers, you have to back your way onto the interstate to prevent front end damage. Ones six and the other is a half a dozen.
  • You are supposed to back slowly so you only hit the fiberglass... if you hit the engine you were going waaaay too fast. :) :)
  • Somewhere there must be the statistic whether large motorhomes are in wrecks more in the front, or more in the back. The answer is out there.

I think he is trying to say that the engine being in the back would suffer more from a rear engine collision.

Guess I'm confused that it's a disadvantage of DPs. Most DPs have a backup camera and many gassers do not. Granted the 12" difference in height might miss the branch from the tree off to the side but that's why the DW is back there when backing in.
Maybe there's a reason why you "don't remember anyone mentioning this"... it has nothing to do with what type of Class A or even Class A's and other types of RVs.
  • Um.... Backing into a tree is not a DP specific failure mode?
