Opinions on the Ford V-10 Motor Please

My husband and I have narrowed down our Class A choices. One is a used 2013 Tiffin Open Road and the other is a new 2014 Newmar Bay Star. Both are comparable units at about the same price point. My husband would like to know how the Ford V10 motor performs. We saw them in I think every gas unit we looked at so we were hoping for some personal opinions and feedback.

We have ruled out diesel as we just can't justify the extra cost at this time.

    My parents have a 1999 35' A class with the V10 triton and they are happy with it. My Dad is a retired mechanic so he knows a bit about engines. They have towed on a dolly a Dodge Grand Caravan with out issue. This unit is designed to rev a bit high which takes some getting used to, but I think the newer units are coupled with a 4 speed or maybe 5 speed transmission which should perform even better.

    It is a great engine. My Class A had one, and never a problem. Pretty decent gas mileage too.

    There is a reason you are seeing them everywhere. They are about the only engine/chassis for the gas motorhomes anymore. Chevy bowed out.

    In the newer class A MH if it is gas its a Ford V10. GM is no longer an option.

    Well then, I guess your stuck with the Ford V10 as that is the only gas engine you will find in a 2013/14 motorhome unless you go diesel.

    We don't have a problem with the Ford V10, I'm sure it's a great motor, I was just looking for some opinions on it. Sorry if that was confusing

    I own a 2000 year model V-10. At the year models your looking at have atleast 3 generation newer V-10 then the one I've got, plus a 5 speed tranny to boot. I got around 7 MPG to 60 MPH, and so far I haven't found a hill I couldn't go up. Just put the paddle to the metal, she'll go any where, just not as fast as a $450,000 diesel rig. Si far I love mine.

    As you noticed, I am not aware of any other "gas" engine choices for new class A coaches.

    If you do a search for V10 or V-10, I think you'll find more positive than negative responses. :W

    Drove a 37 foot class A with a V-10 for about 4 years. Went all over the US and part of Canada. No problems with engine. Did regular maintenance.
    As previous poster said, the big Ds will pass you on the hills, but we made it everywhere
    Now driving one of the Diesels.

    I had a 2001 V10 tow vehicle and that generation of engines had some issues with spark plugs blowing out because of not enough threads to hold them in sufficiently. I'm sure Ford had fixed that problem in the newer engines. I now have a diesel tow vehicle. It might not hurt to ask that question on the Ford V10 forum: www.ford-truck.com/forums/forum49.
