Oregon Coast- From Medford

Have a new Class A motorhome. Will be towing a toad and wanted some input on going from Medford Oregon to the coast. Looks like there is no major route to hwy 101 from I-5. Any suggestions. I have only had a class A for about 6 weeks. Still waiting to get the tow car hooked up.
I wanted to cut over and go to Coos Bay area. Will I have to go back to California and then cut over? I don't want to get into a danger zone with my new coach.
  • 199 from Grants Pass backtracks into CA arriving at Crescent City.

We have routinely traveled Hwy 5 to 138 to 38 to arrive at Reedsport, Or each year.

Check out Winchester Bay just a couple of miles south.

Coos Bay will be about 20 miles south of Reedsport on Hwy 101.

There is no difficult travel on the above route. Of course the non-freeway roads are all two lane rural roads, but a nice Sunday afternoon ride through the country side.

We prefer visiting the Oregon Coast from Coos Bay north on 101.
  • If my goal was to get to Coos Bay, and not see much coast or redwoods, I would take 42. We take 199 because of the scenery.
  • I have driven 42 a few times from I-5 to the coast. You should be OK.
  • Doable doesn't mean comfortable.
Next to Ocean highways are not for just anybody. And some areas are consider "white knuckles driving"
Use google earth pictures to determinate how the roads look like. Take some practice to figure out elevations, but if zoom up and see lot of road SS's , than you know you will sweat driving there.

Made that trip and ther is a road that goes to the coast a very short part of it drops into CA. It is an OK road. Ther is a cutoff to go N to get to OR. Trucks run that road so a MH shouldn't be a problem.

What about that Hyway 42? It cuts over to Bandon from Winston off of I-5
  • Hwy 199 out of Grants Pass. Curves and narrow for about 20 miles. Totally doable. Next choice is go north on I-5 to Winston and take Hwy 42.
