So, we are headed to the great northwest for the first time and getting ideas from friends (no enemies I hope) as to where to visit and roads to take. We head from the northernmost part of Washington State down through Oregon with the last visit being southern California.
Friends suggested we hop on Oregon's HWY 101 South for great scenery but we are questioning if the road is risky being we are in a 37' motorhome. Are a somewhat new to the motorhome experience and want first to be safe.
Any suggestions for State Parks or campgrounds along the way, what would they be?
Appreciate your pros and cons about any....Thanks in advance.
No problem and we did it in our 36ft from south to north. Hope to do it again with our 41ft some day from north to south, as you are doing.
Main reason for N to S is for beginning in late summer, so that by the time we get well into CA, the kids will be back in school and for having the possibility of picking coastal campgrounds at random. That was a real nightmare at times and we learned every trick there was, including how to play the lottery and lessen the odds, somewhat. Late summer on the NW coast allow for midsummer in the Rockies and for places like Glacier NP and another favorite or ours. This assuming one is that way from the east
WA state and Oregon wasn't a problem, however and they have some great SP and beach parks on the coast line approx 50 miles apart. the view is breathtaking for one who is used to different coastal terrain and it was on our bucket list. If I remember correctly 101 goes inland for a ways here and there and is on top of RT1, when on the coastline, in some places.
Going through northern CA we got off of 101 and followed the avenue of the giants through the redwood forest and again, not a problem. We stuck with RT1, whenever possible through central and southern CA, but there are some places, where this is not practical or even allowed.
Again, plenty of nice campgrounds on the coastline, both government and privately owned, with the only problem being southern CA, when the kids aren't in school.
