Owners of RVGarmin gps

I have read some good reports about the RV Garmin 770 here and other places, so I purchased one yesterday. Put in all my particular, height, weight, lengthy, etc. So far on the first 24 hours of use it has screwed me up 5 times. The most egregious was traveling on I-20 W. I had put in my destination, it had me get off at exit 19. It then had me take two quick lefts putting me back to I-20 East and drive to exit 11 where my destination was. There was no reason why it would have me bypass exit 11 the first time and take me 16 miles out of my way. Again this is only one of several screw up in the first 24 hours.

Using BaseCamp at all? In BaseCamp, you can pick a specific vehicle profile and edit the vehicle specs and change the routing preferences, avoiding things like, u-turns, unpaved roads, major highways, toll roads, etc. Not sure what the default settings are in the device for what the chosen vehicle is. There sure are some "gotchas" in using BaseCamp and it takes some time to learn them. I have found it beneficial to do route planning for every trip I make in my pickup and use the 770 all the time, in order to get familiar with it.
As well, using BaseCamp lets you do a thorough job of reviewing the route before loading it on the device.
I started with BaseCamp and quit 3 or 4 times before things finally started to come together. That was after quite a few hours of reviewing youtube videos and reading other guides on the Net.Stick with it, you will get what you are looking for in the 770.

Can you tell us a little more about base camp please. Sounds like a useful thing to know about and I have no idea what and how to set it up.

I would return it and purchase a paper map. They don't screw up.
  • I love my Garmin, although I know not to trust it everytime, and especially on unkown destinations. If they could come up with a "common sense" route instead of just fastest or shortest options.
  • Do you have it set for "Fastest", or "Shortest" route? Fastest will usually take an easier driving "main road" route, although it may be a couple of miles longer, while the shortest route may take you down some funky roads that you wouldn't knowingly choose otherwise. It's worth noting that in most of the cases of a GPS leading folks dangerously astray in the mountains, desert, etc, where the settings were reported, the GPS was set to the shortest route.

I have the 660 and it has also made some errors, but I always review my route before I take a trip. I also suggest purchasing the Rand McNally TRUCKERS ATLAS which will display truck routes so you can verify the trip on the Garmin. While I do not find my Garmin bullet proof, I do find it is reliable most of the time. Also, check your settings.
