Ownership Partner

For the past 25 years, my uncle has owned an airplane with someone (same person the whole time). Just recently, he retired and sold the aircraft. He placed an ad in the newspaper and he and the guy turned this experience into a great friendship. I know he got lucky and it doesn't always turn out well.

I'm curious if anyone has thought about or entered into a partnership with a motorhome? I have budgeted about 60K for a new-to-me coach, but a 120K coach would be much nicer. :B Plus, the costs would be shared, so that would be nice also.
  • 1nhrafan,
Think LONG and HARD before partnering with ANYONE about ANYTHING!!!!!
    Been there......

    Maybe not.

As far as I can tell, the used RV market is still a buyers market in the showbird destination states.

60K can get you a very nice used coach.....if you are willing to shop around and take your time.

But that depends mostly on what your definition of "nice" is.....and your individual situation.

I would not do shared ownership. I also would not loan money to friends.
  • Just my opinion but, I feel there is a big difference between aircraft ownership and motorhome ownership.
You must be licensed to operate the aircraft. Just about anyone with a drivers license can drive the motorhome.

I guess if you get the right person the co-ownership of a motorhome would work.
But, you may not find out if it's the right person until after you buy the RV.

Personally, I wouldn't do it. But that's just me. I don't let anyone drive our Southwind. :)
  • With an airplane you have required maintenance and each action is documented. The value of the plane is based on the accuracy of the logs that go with it. Both partners are aware of the history as well as the ongoing upcoming expenses, which are usually detailed out in hourly costs. In other words, if you use the plane for 10 hours of flight time, you may have to kick in $1000 towards maintenance costs, in addition to your own fuel costs.

All of this may be difficult to determine with a motor home but I am sure that it is doable with the right group of people. Rental companies do it by charging by the mile for use. It may be something similar to an airplane where you pay your up front costs to buy the coach and then pay a mileage cost to cover the necessary maintenance.
  • I entered into my 1st airplane partnership in 1978. I have owned planes with 10 members and as few as 2 members. Never had a bad partnership. Yes, I feel a partnership in a MH would work if entered into with a open mind and rules established before purchase.
