Another option might be to get an account with another EZ-Pass state that doesn't make such (rather arbitrary) distinctions. If you travel the NY Thruway from time to time, the NY pass with the motorhome/RV deal might be worth getting; it basically lets you pay auto toll rates on the thruway for the motorhome, a significant savings. It's available without a periodic monthly or yearly fee. You don't have to be a resident of the state you get your transponder from.
