Pac Brake pedal

I have a 1998 Monaco Dynasty with Cummins engine equipped with a Pac Brake. Today, I went to hit the pac brake pedal and noticed the Allison world transmission was not downshifting. I kept hitting the pedal repeatedly, and finally saw it downshift momentarily. I kept tapping the pedal and it finally starting working again. The PacBrake system itself seems to work flawlessly, it appeared to be more on an error in the pedal, like a connection.
We did have Cummings put on a new Turbocharger several weeks ago, but it worked fine right after that.
Do these pedals go bad? Looks like it's more of a small air hose coming out of the pedal, than an electrical line. I can hear it audibly "click" when I press it up and down and it appears the switch is functioning properly.
Can this be lubricated or is there any maintenance I should be doing to this metal pedal, perhaps it's a piece of dirt in the switch.
Driving back today, it worked all the time, but now I'm wondering what was up with it.
Any help or insight would be appreciated. Thank you
  • Regarding the Pac Brake pedal that had stopped working. I called Monaco tech and he said 98% of all pac brake problems are a bad pedal. ($80 + shipping) He also indicated that if I got a simple on off toggle switch and wired it with the two wires going to the Pac Brake pedal, it should work. I tried that, disconnecting the pedal but it did not activate the system and downshift the transmission. I've checked the two wires and they had 12 volts going to both sides, also checked the 10 amp engine brake fuse, which was ok. Also did a continuity check and both wires from the fuse box seem in tact. (Although when the I then called Pac Brake and he said if I wired two wires back to the engine compartment to the Pac Brake solenoid, and then connected them, the brake would function. I am out of my element at this time and don't want to experiment and will take the unit in to have it checked out. Pac Brake says some manufacturers put an in-line solenoid on the way back and he didn't know what this Monaco Dynasty had. Just FYI. I see in some posts that many don't care for the Pac Brake, but I'll tell you, in driving home, just having to manually gear down the transmission in lower gears, the pac brake makes a huge difference. I just had freightliner check my brakes and after 91,000 miles, I have 75% brake show life remaining!

It's an electrical switch... tapping on it may have cleaned the contacts. I like the foot switch the best of several ways to activate the engine brake as you can coast.
  • Keep in mind that because the pedal is down on the floor, it's very prone to get a lot of dirt in it, especially since it's 18 years old. I would pull it out, clean and reinstall.
