PacBrake PRXB Lubrication

According to Pacbrake's website, proper lubrication includes cycling the brake so as to expose the cylinder actuating rod for lubrication. I tried to actuate the brake with the air charged up but the engine shut off and the key on. DW could not hear anything. Must the engine be running for the Pakbrake to cycle?

Thanks for the insights.
  • Scott. Most ECM-controlled exhaust brakes will not activate unless driving (higher speeds in second gear or faster).

The solenoid that sends air pressure to operate the exhaust brake is just a simple 12 VDC unit. Remove the original wire that supplies the 12 VDC positive and use any other source of 12 VDC positive-- lots of them in the engine compartment.

If there is no connector at the solenoid, install one Protected male and protected female connectors. A $1, 5 minute solution. I would not just apply an outside source of 12 VDC positive to the existing wire-- I don't like "back-feeding" relays/ECM's.
  • If the PB uses the ECM to tell when the throttle is at zero then yes, the eng must be running. (Mine has to be running)
  • If you still have air pressure up, disconnect the positive wire to the exhaust brake solenoid (easy to find-- just trace the air line back from the brake cylinder) and supply 12 VDC positive from another source-- lots of them in the engine compartment.

No need for the engine to be on at all.
  • FOR OPTIMUM RESULTS, FOLLOW THESE SIMPLE STEPS

With the engine off, apply a sufficient amount (4-5 drops) to the following locations:
    - both cylinder pivot ends (A & D)
    - cylinder air line port (B) (some fitting removal required)
    - the main butterfly shaft (E) (this is an area of critical concern,
we recommend a pretty good dose of lube here)
    - cylinder rod (C) (cylinder rod must be extended when applying)

    PRXB only:
    - the base of the spring lever (F)

After lubing it, you should start the engine and cycle the Pac brake a few times. Turn you dash switch on and off. I believe one could install a optional switch in the engine compartment to do this, if I remember correctly.
  • I can't speak for all vehicles, but on mine I need to be over 10 mph for the Pac-brake to function.
