The fan is only supposed to be direct when the motor heats to a certain temperature. But the age of your unit indicates a real possibility that the fan clutch is shot. It is an easy fix if that is the problem. Every auto parts store will carry them...it happens often that they quit working.
BINGO. But stay with the OEM fan. I just replaced mine for the second time. Did it about 10 years ago. Yah, it sounds just like the engine is screaming. Normally when first started up the fan will be engaged for about 2-5 minutes and then it will drop down the just a slow turn. If after that, it's still turning the same rpm as the engine the clutch is most likely bad.
