Painting Galvanized Panels

I'm continuing to restore our MH and am near to painting the bottom 30" or so of the coach. There is galvanized metal panels where the storage doors and all the paint that was there was literally falling off so I am completely stripping any paint that's left. I bought 2 part epoxy primer at the body shops instruction but, from what I have read online I have to wait 3 days before sanding. Is this correct or did I read it wrong
  • They have an etching wash just for galvanized metal. Check at a large paint supply store and you should find what you need. Years ago we used to wash galvanized panels with vinegar before applying the primer or allow it to naturally age out in the sun. Now they have better methods.

X2 on etching before painting, even with epoxy. Not sure why you would think we know more than the instructions.
  • no etching with epoxy primer, yes vinegar was used at one time. I did find the dry time and sanding. Don't know why someone wrote 2-3 days sanding. Obviously I didn't think you would know more than the instructions, maybe someone here has use this product???

Well, like most paints, there is a certain amount of time that it takes to dry/cure. Lacquer sets up very quickly and some enamels can take 30+ days to fully harden. I am assuming that the epoxy primer that you are using just takes 3 days to cure to the point that it can be sanded in preparation for the top coat. I used epoxy primer on an airplane that I painted and I let it set for a week before doing a quick sand. This was on aluminum which may be different than galvanized steel.
