Petite RV Sales aka Lakeside Auto N Sheridan Beach Park IL

We would like to bring our experience with this company to the attention of your readers. We purchased a Dodge Pleasureway RV from them late August 2013.
We were told and shown that the air conditioner worked. It doesn’t. We realise now the cab air con was on full during the demonstration. This does work and therefore it was cooling the van whilst the air con proper was just circulating air.
We were told a generator switch needed replacing. We were told that the company would locate the necessary switch and post it on to us. This didn’t happen. On calling they said they had posted it and had the package returned. The address we gave was a valid one and no parcel or parcel notification was ever received. It now also turns out that the labor involved in this replacement is likely to be high.
The water tank leaks. After purchase we flushed out the tanks at a nearby dump station (a job which hadn’t been done) and filled up with fresh water. The fresh water tank leaked. We were not far away so we went back to the yard. We were told that we had over-filled the tank and the safety pressure valve had released the excess water. We believed what we were told. It was not true. The tank needs to be repaired or replaced.
We were told the vehicle had been pressure tested and had no leaks. We now find 3 window seals have major leaks.
The company advertises that all their vehicles are checked before sale; that everything that should work does work. This is not true and moreover when the company is told of various failings our experience is that you get no response: emails are not replied to; phones are not answered. The company also advertises that ‘We do not buy these RV's from auctions! We take our time with the owner and ask very specific questions about the RV.’ The autocheck report on our vehicle, which we were given after conclusion of sale, shows no owner since being traded at auction.
There a similar post on rv.net (now closed) about this company, when they were known as Lakeside Auto Sales.
We realise some will say we were naïve and too trusting. We will certainly never do business with Petite RV and Auto Sales again. If readers decide to do so we suggest they thoroughly test what they buy before parting with any cash because, based on our experience, you will be smoothly sold a lemon but you will get absolutely no after sales service whatsoever.
  • bar_20 is giving good advice. We purchased our used PW Plateau TS from an RV dealer and it was a trade-in vehicle. However, we had it checked from end to end and top to bottom including new brakes all round and oil&filter change. We took out a separate warrantee--which was probably a waste of money. We received the complete service history including the service booklet and copies of all services, parts etc added to the vehicle. It has run like a top since purchase that is, almost 2 years. I do sympathize with kiwi abroad. Buying anything used, including a house is potentially fraught with a problem even missed by a close professional inspection. Hopefully kiwi abroads vehicle will be generally a good one.
  • It could be a consignment sale. Was there any water in the tank when you bought it? It could be the leak only occurs when the water level reaches a certain level. I doubt the dealer checked anything out. A lot of dealers if they sell used RV's only sell them on a consignment basis. That way they don't put up any money. They sell the vehicle for the seller, give them free parking on their lot and take a percentage of the sale. They take the word of the seller that everything works. Bottom line is never take the word of a salesman and get everything in writing on the sales contract. You made quite a few mistakes in checking out the vehicle. The dealer is under no obligation to fix anything if there was no warranty or anything written on the sales contract. Sorry.
  • Waukegan, IL. In Lake County.
Up by the WI/ILL border. On the shore of Lake Michigan.

    Beach Park just outside Waukegan.
  • Buying an RV from a used car dealer. Is never a good idea.
We used to live up in that area. I suggest you look into a real RV dealer for your next one.
  • One of us is from New Zealand and one from the UK so we are not used to the system here (which is not to say that all second hand vehicle salespeople in either of our countries should be believed!). We did have the engine checked by an independent mechanic and that was given the all clear. So far we have had no mechanical problems except for the windscreen wiper light intermittently staying on for no reason. We can live with that one! I guess it is a case of Buyer Beware but if our experience helps other members become more aware then at least the posting will have done some good.
  • From your post, you sound as if you may be from the UK. A very unfortunate welcome to America. I am sorry for your experience, but in all likelihood you bought the vehicle "as is where is." You unfortunately believed what the personnel from the dealer told you. When buying anything used, spending the money to have it professional checked by an independent technician is money well spent. Never believe what a salesperson tells you.
