portable air conditioner in my class A

Has anyone tried portable air conditioner The one with hot air tub out the window . I'm Thinking of using one LG 8000 btu as its lower wattage for my smaller suit case kipor gen 2600w. Specs say 880 watts to run it . This would be for weekends stays without electric hookup . Low noise
as my 4000 watt onan kinda makes allot of noise . (1992 model) I was looking to set in front of passenger seat tub out passenger window. Water tube down through floor when parked . Like Idea of dehumidifying witch is does also Lot humidity in Minnesota lately. any ideas or info be great . I have a spot in back to lock it down when traveling . size there only 12x14x 30.

ps found out today if i run just bat charger and lights it can run between 500 w and 1000w well air conditioner on top can run to 1800 watts That is way to much for smaller 2600watt gen. :(
  • We have a 12,000 BTU unit that works great, It sits by the co-pilot seat, and vents out the small sliding window. I have a plug that I can hook up to a 110 outlet on the outside power supply. Reason, basement air, just wasn't cooling rig enough.
  • Thanks for the info I will tell you out come after I buy one ;) this is a great forum .

  • Hi,

You really want a two tube portable A/C. If you use a single tube, then the A/C will take in about 150 CFM of inside cool air, and blow it out the window. Then outside humid and not filtered air will come in, through any cracks in the walls or windows, then bring in humid air to the space you are trying to cool. If you think about it, there is only about 300 square feet X 8 or 2,400 cubic feet, and a single tube A/C can remove all that air in about 20 minutes!

Yes it is nice to use a short garden hose or even a washing machine hose to let the unit drip outside. You can collect a lot of humidity with one of those A/C units.

So your plan is to use a smaller quiet generator to run this A/C? That would be fine. A MSW inverter will not run a high torque motor such as this A/C, but a pure sine wave about 1,800 watts will handle the surge wattage, and run the 800 watt A/C unit.

Some are even buying 800 watts of solar panels, and then run the A/C with that!

SunElec.com has reasonable priced solar panels.

    Have fun camping!

  • Any air conditioner is also a dehumidifier. Pulling air over cold coils will draw humidity from the air. Put a glass of ice water on the table and see how much humidity you get on the outside of the glass. Same idea in an AC unit.
  • I have one and it works great. Mine is the combination AC/heat pump with the single vent tube to the outside. Mine is on wheels and we have a place behind the passenger captains seat where we store it when not in use. I vent mine out through the doghouse cover.
  • Well, we had one in an upstairs bedroom in our house at one time, huge unit. Wouldn't know where I would have room for it in the motorhome. Heavy, bulky, certainly not something I'd want to find room for. And it didn't work that well anyway. We had to run it most of the day for it to make the bedroom cool.
