Power awning questions

I have a 2004 Jayco Granite Ridge with a Carefree One-touch power awning. It has started to intermittently stall when I take it in or out. I have done a search but have not found specific answers to my question, which is how to do a logical troubleshooting procedure for this unit. For instance, what locations to check the voltage readings and what the most likely cause for intermittent operation would be. Sometimes it works fine, other times it rolls out part way then stops, I let it sit for a while, and then it works again. I am assuming the motor is ok or it would not work at all, maybe a bad connection somewhere? Anyway, any information on a logical process to check it out would be appreciated.

    Dennis,

Here's the Awning Thread I mentioned.

I know that with lots of motorized stuff, the device (like a home garage door) has to work freely by hand or the power device (like a garage door opener) will not operate it.

If I had to guess, awning motor is getting hot for some reason, and has an internal temperature safety that shuts it off till it cools. Part of why it's a guess is that I know 120VAC motors commonly have these safeties. I don't know if they're popular in 12VDC motors.
  • JD, thanks for your response. I will definitely check it out to see if I can figure out the problem. Of course my biggest fear is being in the campground and not being able to bring the awning in during a storm or when it is time to leave. I understand parts are very scarce for this awning so I hope it is a simple fix. Thanks again and anyone else who encountered this problem your comments would be welcomed.

Dennis, there are troubleshooting instructions on the Carefree of Colorado website, Discontinued Products. There's another case running right now, maybe in Tech Issues, where the motor fails to keep the awning moving. Search for that, and see if that thread or the Carefree documentation helps you.
You can find documentation of the connection points. If it was mine, I think I'd set up bypass wiring, direct from a battery, to the awning motor with a circuit breaker in the line. Polarity one way runs the awning out, reversing the polarity brings it in.
I've thought power awnings are nothing but trouble. Lately I've gotten to thinking of the physical strain required to extend the arms. It could easily be the most strenuous part of RVing, and something we all can't handle.
