Power surge

When not on the road,I park my RV in a RV storage faculty under a canapy with 50 amp power . I utilize my progressive surge suppressor . Lately, I noticed 3 times this past week that the clock on microwave was off,I reset it each time and went out checked my surge suppressor and it showed the code for high voltage. Today I was actually in the coach installing a new faucet when the power went off. This time ;(while off) the surge suppressor had the code for high power and since power was still off it had the reading for current voltage that is was blocking. It read L1. 127. L2 133. My question can the other coaches here that don't have surge suppressors be damaged?

Be glad you have surge protection. You seen 133 but the inital surge may have been even higher. Voltages that high normally don't affect converters, inverters and resistance loads but are very bad for electronics like TV's, computers and some circuit boards. Most RVs in storage are probably ok because not much is energized.

Many/most modern computers and TVs and other electronics with switching power supplies are not especially susceptible to moderate voltage excursions. In fact, many are now designed to operate from 100V to 240V nominal without adjustment or modification, that range covering the worldwide electric supply. (This is nice for the manufacturer because they don't have to make different versions of their machine for different world markets—they only need to throw the right sort of power cord in the box.)

Of course, Murphy will generally insist that the most expensive and/or hardest to replace device in your RV will be the one most readily destroyed by a power supply disturbance...and the cheap radio or whatever that you'd love to have an excuse to get rid of will be immortal.

I think the design threshold for damage is 135 but do not hold me to that... but if yours is cutting out at 130-133, that would likely be the case.

Report it to the facility management and recommend they inform other clients.. If you do this, and someone gets hit with a kilobuck or more repair bill for fried electroincs, It is on management, not you.

  • From the Progressive Industries web site

    For the EMS-HW50C

    High/Low Voltage Protection:

Whenever AC power falls below 104 volts, or rises above 132 volts, the EMS automatically shuts down power to the RV. The EMS will monitor the power and once the AC power rises above 104 volts, or below the 132 volt level, the time delay indicator flashes for the preset time and then automatically restores power to the RV.

  • Possible, but not likely. That voltage doesn't appear high enough to be damaging. Jmo
