PowerMax PM3. vs PM4. Converter

We just bought a PM3-55 3 stage charger/ converter. Noticed that There's now a 4 stage version that also has a "sulphation" mode for de-scaling the plates.

Seems like we could do the sulphation mode by hooking up our smart automobile charger. Would we need to disconnect the RV house batteries from the solenoid, or just turn the solinoid off?
  • Sounds like I don't need to worry about DE-sulfation...we generally camp for 2-3 days at a time and stay plugged in while at home
  • Hi,

Yes, the PD line up with wizard does a "stirring" voltage every 21 hours for 15 minutes. It goes to 14.4 volts to do so. That is not going to equalize or desulphate anything. It comes under the category of "better than a punch in the nose".

For us the DESULF really only comes into play when we are camping for extended times and do many 50% to 90% Charge states on the battery bank. After 12-14 times we start noticing the battery performance start falling off - i.e. not holding charge state as long as before...

For the usual 3-4 days camping off the power grid usually doesnt effect the battery bank performance and getting longer charge periods right away gets us back to normal...

Our PD9260C smart mode converter/charger does a 15 minute DESULF charge mode every 21 hours I think the specs says...

Disconnecting the batteries from your current converter/charger would be all you would need to do to perform the DESULF charge mode from an external charger connected directly to the batteries.

My battery bank wiring using three BATTERY SWITCHES is sometimes deemed overkill by others but sure comes in handy when you need to do battery maintenance when camping. I can use one-all-or none depending on my battery switch settings.
