To clarify...
The Television is a newer one with:
The DVD player built INTO the TV on the top.
so when I put the DVD in, it goes right into the television
The only reason to be disconnecting the CATV box is to watch the CG cable that obviously doesn't require (or isn't compatible) with your box? If so, take the coax (technically it's not a 'wire') feeding the CATV box and feed it directly to the TV, or go to Radio Shack and buy an 'F' Barrel connector. and bypass the box.
If all you're doing is trying to watch a DVD, ignore all of the above and stick the DVD in. Internal or external, DVD's have nothing to do with the cable box.
BTW- You stand a way better chance of talking to a real English speaking body in the US if you call during US business hours, and not at night on the weekend. I learned this a long time ago dealing with Vonage.
