If the DVD player works with the cable box connected, but turned off (or even on), then leave it that way.
If the DVD will not work at home Then you will have to disconnect.
FACT: Most modern TV's have A/V inputs as well as RF and many have HDMI and some have other (S-Video, Pby and so on) DVD players usually have only A/V (3 cable white, red, yellow color code) some have S-Video never seen one with RF.
So you may just need to select the proper input with the TELEVISION (NOT the cable) remote.
