Does your generator produce power to other accessories? Does the unit run with just the fan and no AC? Does the unit make any noise when you turn on the AC (drone) and bog down the generator RPM? If the compressor is in poor condition the initial demand to start the compressor will require a higher amount ampere current which is available on the land connect. The generator might not produce the 20 amperes or come close to the maximum rating due to age and maintenance issues. And one last does when your unit is turned on. With a land line connection does the unit turn on smoothly and start blowing cool air (not cold yet too soon for that to happen) within a second or two? If it does, you might consider checking the generator to ensure it can still produce over 20 amps. One single roof top should not require 50 amps the rating should be listed on the AC unit.
