Putting MH insurance "to sleep"???

At one time we had an older car that we left in Florida year round, we are Snow Birds. We used Progressive Insurance on it, they have a low milage plan where they send you an e-mail every 6 months and ask for an odometer reading, and base the premiums on miles driven.

My beef with Collision coverage is that the cost doesn't decrease as the vehicle ages. At some point it simply isn't worth repairing the damage and the insurance adjuster will only offer the cost of buying a similar vehicle. I drop collision coverage on all vehicles as they get 8 or 10 years old. We never made a claim for collision damage in over 40 years of driving.

I tried to switch to a company that had said I could still take off the liability insurance in the winter - and found that this company also changed its policy to disallow this on motorhomes. It did discount the charge to about half price. But the second company charges more for our minivan, so the change would have been a net increase.

Anyway, I can now legally take the MH for a drive every month to exercise the tires.

Just got my from my insurance agents office (at State Farm).

I was surprised how easy it was to turn on and off the collision part of the warranty. Just call or email requesting that the collision be suspended, then call again when you want it turned back on! No charge for the service, and it saves us over 400.00 a year.

I usually suspend 2-3 of my vehicles over the winter every year. I keep only the comprehensive on them.

I do it every six months, only pay for 1/2 a year on three of my vehicles.
Sort of a gamble if someone breaks in and damages them or a fire breaks out, but a gamble I'm willing to take. Been doing it for over 20 years. Insurance companies hate me but who cares, because I hate paying them for full coverage when I don't drive them.
I also do take them off with the state as inoperative during those six months.

I have always dropped collision for winters, including when I had a loan on the MH. There was never a problem doing it with either the ins. co. or the lender. I will be dropping the Newmar ins. this week but leave the Roadtrek on so I can use it this year yet.

I always kept only fire and theft on for the winter. This year the company changed its policy on motorhomes, requiring full year full coverage or nothing. They said the price for liability would be lowered in understanding that it wouldn't be driven in winter. But it wasn't lowered much if any. The charge for liability is $266 compared to $254 for an old 3/4 ton van I keep for occasionally hauling stuff. That seems crazy to me, even if they don't know I only drive it ten days a year. The agent said it means motorhomes are way more dangerous to other vehicles on the road. I will switch to another company that offers less for the MH than the van AND is willing to take off the liability in winter. It does charge more for our most used vehicle but works out to substantially less overall. It's not so much the price as the unreasonable attitude.

For ten days a year on the road and a ten year old MH I don't think the collision insurance is worthwhile, either.

I saw in the news that some US companies offer a tracking device in the vehicle and lower rates if it sees less travel and reasonable speeds. Anyone have any experience with that?

My policy allows me to change it to "storage" mode once a year for when it's put away for the winter. It does drop the price quite a bit for the winter months. In the spring when we are ready to go again, all it takes is a phone call and we are fully covered again.

The son-in-law got caught up in that
with a vehicle he took off the road during a rebuild.

When he went to renew the plates they fined him for not
having insurance. That State REQUIRES plated to be turned
in anytime there is NO insurance on the vehicle.

Check with your State of registration.

I drop liability (on my bus, Caddy, Liz's Grand National, and our motorcycles) for winter storage. I do NOT drop comprehensive.
