We've bought the bags over the years and have had the same issues. We just don't use them enough to experiment with other brands. Even those we don't use them, I keep seeing that Ziploc makes bags.

These aren't the vacuum suction bags, but they have the large (better quality) Ziploc zipper. I would think that you could depress them enough with body weight or put a wood cutting board on top, push out the air and seal. That might be worth trying, even though they won't suck down as tight.
