Question: Awning, Roll Cover, and Sunscreen

Just obtained a sunscreen for my 18 ft. awning. My question is, can I roll the sunscreen up with the awning, or should it be removed before rolling up the Dometic awning? The awning also has a roll guard at the top.
Thanks,
DM

  • We have the Shade Pro and just an 8" piece rolls up into our Carefree power awning. We've had it on there for 5 years.
  • We had ours made so there is about an 18" long piece that stays in the tube. The bottom section attaches with Velcro to the top section. This allows you to remove most of the fabric and just roll up the smaller section.
  • I have a 17 foot awning. Bought a sunscreen at the Mesa, Az. swap meet. Slides into the track, a piece about 10 inches log the width of the amning with a hevy duty zipper allows the screen to be un-zipped in seconds. This 10 inch piece can then be rolled up with the awning, no problem.

They have some pretty nifty looking stuff.

  • I don't roll mine up with the awning unless it's a wind emergency. The few times I have had to do that it didn't hurt the awning.
    I have a A&E brand awning.
  • Thanks Wyotraveler, that's about what I expected to hear, the rolled up awning package is too thick when rolled up. I like your homemade screen system using readily available materials. Not sure what brand of screen I have, it was given to me recently. It is very heavy duty, and should sustain a high degree of inclimate weather if in the rare event that it's left down (ie, FL Thunderstorms). Last weekend in Shelby NC, I was tent camping when a thunderstorm with 70mph winds and a nearby tornado wind destroyed my tent AND a First Up canopy, a good reminder for paying attention to approaching weather.
  • I have a Colorado Carefree. They say you can't roll it up. DW is making ours. So we just constructed some scrap into the track to try it. It will roll up BUT! Awning roll is too large and awning arms won't lay flat. So the answer is NO won't roll up. However, DW bought some shade cloth at Lowes. Same stuff CW sells already made into a screen. At the farm store we got some 3/16 inch dia. Plastic clothes line. It looks the same as Colorado Carefree uses in their track for the awning. We tried it and it works. DW is making our sun screen for about 1/3 or less of the one at CW. Our awning is called 17 ft. But fabric is 16 ft 1 3/4 inches. Ours will be exactly 16 ft. Very easy to slide in and out of the track. The plan is we can roll it up while parked over night. Or if it gets windy. Really doesn't roll up good enough to drive down the road. Our will be 4 ft wide plus a little for binding on edge etc. That will drop it down far enough to keep sun off us.
