Radio antenna

I have a 2012 Damon Challenger. I have a problem with dash radio and outside radio not receiving and signal. When you first start the coach the radio works fine. But, after about 10 mins signal goes away. Doesn't matter if am or fm signal. Service repair cannot find any problems. Of course they are located within large city and stations are close by they check with. I cannot stay with it while they check it out. I keep saying antenna on top of coach. They say no problems. Any ideas where I can start to look?

Well the little stubby AM/FM Dash radio that Damon put on my Intruder. Works great if I can see the tower lights.. But for long range reception.. It works exactly as I would expect it to work. (NOT very well).

That said.. I had problems with the dash radio cutting in and out, and it was driving me bananananananas.

On my intruder the Pioneer dash radio feeds like a 150 watt stereo amp on the side wall near the parking brake.. And on the firewall there is a relay box so it uses the same speakers as the big Pioneer home theater system (Which by the way works well but not when rolling, rolling, rolling down the highway due to that relay box disconnecting the speakers)

Turns out one of the MOLEX plugs (Multi Pin, milkey white plastic thing) was not properly seated,, I finally pressed on it, heard the CLICK as the latched latched. and it's worked much better since.. Still no long range radio though.

I have a nice LONG wire for my LONG range radio.

(I mean I can chat with folks in Italy with only 30-40 watts of transmit power.. Not bad.. Digital of course).

I will get under the dash to check this out. I don't think it is the radio because it is two different radios that the problem is happening on. Both dash and the outdoor entertainment one too. And it does use the same speakers as the entertainment system inside coach. Could just be a simple fix.

Alot of new RFI issues are being introduced all the time in the RV's. The lastest new source of RFI may be from recent installation of LED lights...

I know i had big time interference with my HDTV when using the OTA Antenna for digital signals from local towns, my WX ALERT RADIO, and My HAM RADIO setup all suffered from the LED installation. I never noticed the FM radio.

Another source of big time RFI is from almost any INVERTER setup. In my case the INVERTER would eat up my HAM RADIO operations especially in 7MHZ bands.

You can find out real quick if the LED lights or the INVERTER is causing interference by just turning them off and see if your FM RADIO jumps back to life...

Worth a check at any rate...

  • x2 on the radio, not antenna. Might want to try another radio for testing.
  • From your description I would not suspect the Antenna. Antenna's usually either work, or not work. Not start and then "fail" after warm up.

I would point at the radio, this type of fault is not uncommon. Some component is probably failing due to heat. I would guess something in the power-supply, since it's both AM and FM.

Simple "Fix" may be just a new radio.
