I "shaved" the backside of the catch you are talking about. It was too tight and would not go over the screen door piece far enough to fully release the screen door latch unless I pushed it over manually, "shaving" off just enough to let it go over the latch by its self solved the problem.

Thanks for your input. I called our local dealer and they had one in stock for $4.49. What you describe is exactly what has been happening. Here's hoping the 'new' part will work better. Maybe the protrusion you mention wasn't long enough on the old part. We'll see.
