real world mileage, diesel vs gas

Am contemplating an early to mid 2000's Class A. Will be pulling an 18' enclosed trailer. Am leaning towards a diesel pusher. Dealer is trying to tell me a gasser will get as good a mileage and as good a power. I'm a diesel mechanic and I'm not buying it. What are some real world mileages and performances out there on both.

  • my big concern is how bad is the gasser going to pull down on the hills. you being from wy will know I'm sure.
  • Gassers can tow 5000 pounds. Diesels 10000 pounds. Based on just what you want to tow I'd get a diesel. My 34 ft gasser with V10 gets about 6.1 honest mpg towing a 4000 pound Jeep. On flat land with no mtn grades I get upward of 6.9 honest mpg. However, I wouldn't base getting any MH on mpg. My first priority would be does it do what I want.

2008 36' class A Ford v10. Driving 55 to 60 mph. No toad. No trailer. Average 8.5mpg. Happy!

2001 f350 dually. 40' FW TH. Basically the same speed and mpg as the class A.
