Rear Lights ( Brake,Signal & Running)

On my 2002 Allegro Bus the rear lights are configured as
4 lights on each side.
Top = Orange ( which is my Signal but also
My Brake lights?

Middle 2 = Red ( which are just running lights).

Bottom = White (which is for Reverse)??

My question to all is this config correctly?
It seems to me the Brake Lights should be Red??

Any & all help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank You !
  • I changed all my rear lights to led. When I put it back togeather I messed up the lense arrangement and had amber brake lights instead of signal :S

Thanks all for your time & expertise as I will
attempt to resolve my issue on my tail
lights. I would assume it a matter of switching
around a few wires, I hope!

Thanks Again RV Net & its Members.

    Dan,
Questions for ya, are you the original owner of this vehicle? How long has this condition (weird action of "Yellow brake lights" been happening? Has any work been done on those tail lights prior to you noticing the wrong colored brake lights?

    Dano214,
Well Sir, the short answer is NO, something is not right in your lighting setup. Prior to 1969 (I think that was the year) it was OK to have Amber brake lights. But, there was a major change and, from that point on, they must all be red.

If a car, truck, motor home etc. has any amber tail lights, about 99.9999999999999999% of the time, they're TURN SIGNALS ONLY!! They do not even light up with the running lights. So, that leaves REDS to be the brake lights and of course, red running lights.

If there are REDs only back there, then, that color takes care of all the operations except for back-up lights.

Now, your coach is an '02 so, it should be under the newer rules of tail light colors but, maybe somehow it slipped through, heck, I don't know. When you look up lighting in the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, there's quite a few paragraphs on the subject but, as usual, you have to be a lawyer to comprehend what's printed.

  • Rear brake lights are always red, turn signals are yellow front and rear, white are backup lights.
