Rear Steps Won't Retract

2010 Newmar Canyon Star rear steps won't retract.

First step in the troubleshooting guide says to disconnect the steps from the chassis. Done that. Next check for power on the big red wire of the chassis connector with the step switch on. Got 12.5 volts. Step 3 is check for power on the same wire with the step switch off. Did that still have 12.5 volts so book says change the switch. Did that and still have the same readings!
I homed across the terminals of the switch and operated the switch.the switch had continuity with it on and open with it off,, so the switch is working and should not be the problem.

My question is. Is there a relay, controlled by the step switch, that sends power to the steps?

  • In my case, the mechanism would sort of lock and the motor would trip it's overcurrent relay trying to bring it back from lock. When I loosened the mounting bolts, that took the tension off, and bingo it worked fine. I put some shims under the bolts and it kept on working after that.
  • Did you check the two step grounds?
What is make and model of the step?
