Rear view system only works in reverse now....

I ran over a piece of truck tire in the road, I was able to straddle it but after that I noticed my rear view wasn't working. I don't know if these two events are related or not. When I got home and started backing into the port, I noticed the rear view WAS working. It only works when the transmission is in reverse.

I've climbed under and looked for anything obvious like some wires loose etc but didn't see anything.

Any ideas? I'm searching for any manual I might have for the rear view system. Thanks.

  • Thank you for all of the excellent replies.

I hate to admit it but after checking the fuse to the thing I went back in to have another look at the monitor controls. There was a button that I had overlooked and sure enough, it was the standby/on button. MountainAir and Bumpy nailed it much to my embarrassment. :o:S

    (Please don't tell anyone).

I'm just learning this motorhome, I've only had it for 11 years. :R

    Thanks again.

  • I have basically the same motorhome.

Is your problem with the original Intec black & white monitor installed in the dash? If yes, running over something in the road is probably not the problem as the wiring runs above the headliner. If I remember correctly, the Intec had a switch to make it stay on all the time. If that switch was off, then it only came on when the coach was placed in reverse. Maybe the switch on yours is defective, or a wire inside the case to the switch has broken. I would first verify that you have 12 volts coming into the Intec monitor. I believe it may have an inline fuse on it somewhere near the back of the monitor. If you do not have 12 volts there but are getting 12 volts from the reverse sense line I think you would have the symptoms you are describing. Look at the link below and go about half way down the page to see a typical wiring diagram (for a later model Intec but yours is probably similar).

    intec wiring diagram

I removed my Intec and replaced with a color LCD monitor (and new camera). If you have to remove the monitor, it drops out behind the dash and is somewhat difficult to remove due to all the other wiring and obstructions. I pulled mine out through the center console after removing the drawer.

If this is a replacement monitor/camera where someone has run new wires under the coach, then the road impact damage could be a factor, but the power feeds are still under the dash. The replacement monitors will typically have two inputs as described in a post above...one 12 volt switched with ignition and another 12 volt that is hot only when the coach is in reverse (which is like the diagram in the link referenced above).

I hope you find your problem.

    dreamer,
Depending on "who" made your system and, just how they wired it, most cameras and monitors are triggered by two power sources. The first being, IGNITION ON and, the second is when the coach is put into reverse. And, the reverse or, back up light switching system is what does the actual triggering of it. Now, first off, based on how you're wording your original post and, what you're asking, it sounds as if your system "used" to work normally while motoring down the road but, it now ONLY WORKS IN REVERSE, correct?

If that's the case, then it sounds as if either a fuse has blown or, simply a connection has gone bad that, triggers the monitor and camera for IGNITION ON phase of the wiring. Mine is the Sony system and that's how it works but, again, I'm not sure yours is wired the exact same. I would suppose it's very close to how mine works.

Yes, there should also be multiple inputs on the back side of the monitor. Those are for alternate inputs like side view cameras and more. When mine was brand new, the coach came with an "Alpine" GPS system that was wired into one of those other ports. It was broke and out of service by the time we acquired the coach.

Anyway, do check for a possible fuse or, loose connection.

  • Mine doesn't have a reverse only button, but has inputs for two cameras, with a switch to select. After knocking the camera plug out by accident, I found that one of the inputs works ONLY if the coach is NOT in reverse!! The other works like it always did, all the time. Not a problem, just weird!

that would be my guess too.
