recall on Norcold refrigerator

As many of our forum members know, there has been a recall on a part of the Norcold refrigerator. I have had four replacements and now waiting on the part for the fifth time. I am wondering if other members are having the same problems so many times as I have had. Does any of the forum members have any remedy for the replacement part. Is there anything that I may be doing or anything that I can do to keep from this part going bad so often. I had this part replaced in Sept. 2014, went to Fl. for the winter and came back home the first week of March 2015. Everything worked perfectly. I parked it under my shed and did not use it for about 2 months. When I was getting ready to take a trip yesterday, the refrig. would not come on. When this replacement part goes bad, the little red light blinks and nothing works. Will not switch on or anything. If anybody has a solution, I would sure appreciate the info. I don't know the name of the replacement part, but its on the back side of the refrig and on the outside. Thanks in advance

  • If the sensor turned the power off because of high temperature, then I would say it is time for a new refrigerator. That sensor all it is, is for your own protection in case it gets so hot it could start a fire.

NO big deal, I have had around three recalls and that was to install a better sensor then the two before. I have never had any problems with the power turning off and I bought the coach new in April of 2003. But there have been some problems with a small percentage considering the thousands that Norcold has sold. Not only to RV's, but to big boats etc.

Some recommend going to a residential fridge and it is something to consider, but it will not be cheap. You got to have at least six to eight house batteries, a pure sine wave inverter 2000 watt. Good idea to have solar panels to keep them batteries charged if you dry camp. New fridge that will fit into the slot where your old fridge sat. Modification have to be made so it does not look like an add on. You can only get so many square inches into that hole, so make sure the residential fridge does not stick out like a sore thumb.

I have had my Norcold 1200 LRIM for twelve years already and even if it goes bad now, I think it has more then paid for itself. I probably would buy another fridge that would use propane and AC power. Love it!

What residential unit did you use? We had a fire, whose damage is FINALLY being repaired. The insurance company won't pay for the fridge because it caused the fire (absurd). Anyhow, I am trying to find a residential one that will fit where the 1200 came out of.

We used a 22 cubic foot whirlpool but I had some cabinet work and trim to do. I did it myself so it wasn't a big deal. its also a few inches deeper which for our floorplan wasn't a problem. The trim kinda hides that though. I believe there is another model a little smaller that fits right in the hole though. Do a search on this forum for "residential" and you should find it. Very common fridge for the Norcold Upgrade. Once you go residential you'll never look back. :)

This is the only picture I have online. Hope it helps.

  • When you wash the coach, Are you squirting water on the access panel for the fridge? It doesn't like water. Also look at ARP.

  • Actually if you are going to stay in RV parks, THEN the residential is perfect. You really do not need to add extra batteries or solar panels. You will still need a pure sine wave inverter for when you are traveling to keep the fridge running. Samsung used to have a fridge that was almost the same size as the Norcold, but I am not sure if they are still manufacturing it. Most fridge companies will not warranty refrigerators for RV's. I believe Samsung was the only one that did. Not sure!

X2.. I just had to replace my sensor as it had failed. The repair guy asked me if I had recently washed my rig, and I had in fact done it the day the fridge had failed. He showed me where the sensor was sitting and you could see it through the side vent. Simply, when I washed the rig, I splashed water into the sensor, shorting it out. He told me that this was the most common thing he has seen with these "failed" sensors. He broke the case open and we could see the scorch marks on the circuit board... I've since modified mine with a thin plastic cover to prevent water from hitting it again.

I've always tried to be careful and not get water into that vent, but... Accidents happen.
  • If I can't get it to reset, can I bypass the little black box?

As long as you are sure it did not actually work and shut it down because of a too high a temp it's easy enough to reroute the large wire going into the black box to where the blue wire connects on the control board.
