Recommendations for a Toad??

Get one with a sun roof so you can poke your head out the top. :B

Have you sat in a smart car? More room than one might think. Perhaps an older Jeep Cj 5?

I would look for a four wheel drive SUV for your area.
I have had several Suzukis. Even though not sold in North America any longer there are many low mileage used ones.
Some like Jeeps and Honda CRVs.

If 4 down consider tow bar, lights and aux brake for any toad. I would not consider any car requiring a tranny lube pump or drive shaft disconnect. DO NOT take anyone's input on towing 4 down for a car. See it in writing in the car manual along with towing instructions. Be sure you see the correct information like 2WD vs 4WD, etc. We're satisfied with our 04 CRV and 2014 is the last 4 down towing year for that car due to tranny changes.

A dolly or trailer are other options.

Here's a good site for cars that are towable. There are always changes by the manufacturers from year to year so if you are looking at different years you'll have to check for those specific years.

Since it seems you're in Colorado, you have awesome backroads to travel. We absolutely loved our Jeep Liberty for doing 4-wheeling or just driving the gravel roads to amazing scenery in Colorado! The Jeep Liberty isn't made anymore but you can still find used ones. I'd highly recommend it.

We use a ford ranger king cab. Light and easy to tow, camper shell for extra stuff 4x4. In pinch the jump seats will hold 2 adults. Wouldn't work for long distance but out to dinner is fine. 4 down as its a 5sp. The mazda is the same truck.

Both Motorhome Magazine and FMCA Family Coach Magazine have annual towing guides which are published every December'ish. Back issues are available on-line. Generally Fords and GM products are towable 4 down. Previous year Hondas were towable. If you can find a good Saturn, they were wonderful towable cars. Towing flat (4 down) is really easier than using a dolly, I've done both, enjoyed both, flat is easier. Do get a supplemental braking system. Get the motorhome first, then the tow-car. You will need to know the GVCWR (gross vehicle combined weight rating) of the motorhome, then weigh the motorhome, anticipate your baggage weight, and you can have a better idea what you can safely tow. My experience is that you will want to look for a car with a curb weight of less than 4000 lbs. This might still keep you slightly above the recommended towable weight. My previous motorhome had a 5,000lb hitch but was only rated to tow 3700lbs. My current diesel has a 5000lb hitch but after weighing it with equipment I really should only tow 4,600lbs (my Ford Explorer tow car weighs 4,700 lbs with 1/4 tank of gas).
Just some fun things to think about.

Gasser MH you will be limited to 5,000 lb or less. I tow a Jeep Wrangler and like it. I'm 6'-2". It is hard for me to crawl into those little rice rockets.
