- Go_Dawgs1ExplorerKeep mine on auto all the time. Just finished a 5700+ mile trip and kept in on the whole time. Used 1/4 tank of propane in 5 weeks and that includes the water heater. Always kept forgetting to turn it off while refueling and didn't blow up so all is good. We also carry a 30Q cooler for beverages so the kids don't always get into the fridge.
- rockhillmanorExplorer IIFridge on auto. Turns over to propane when a/c power is off and when hooked up to power it switches back to electric.
It's no different than running it on propane when at a CG.
I turn it off when fueling the RV and turn it off when filling the propane tank.
20 years and counting and still here to talk about it. - mockturtleExplorer IIYes, I do.
- SteveAEExplorerI too am in the minority, as I turn my fridge and propane off when traveling. Easy to do, food stays plenty cold, and I figure it's cheap insurance. Besides, it's required when fueling anyway.
- mlts22Explorer IILast time I was driving a MH, it was summer here in TX, so I was running the roof A/C and generator, so I flipped the fridge to 120VAC. Since I was using gasoline for the genset, might as well save propane.
Of course, another trick I learned is to have freezer packs in the freezer compartment (assuming there is room). Then, when you flip the fridge off, move a couple to the lower compartment and call it done. Those can last 12 hours easily, perhaps longer. - snowdanceExplorer

doesn't the propane have to be off in all tunnels?
Some long ones but not all. They have signs and stop you to check before going into the long ones we have been thru.. - Reader1ExplorerDH says there are no concerns - I am afraid to leave the propane and refrig on... When we travel East we go through several tunnels - doesn't the propane have to be off in all tunnels?
- Sandia_ManExplorer IIWithout the slightest hesitation, propane mode while traveling down the road.
- JamesBrExplorerMine is on auto except when I am filling up the propane tank. With the size of the fridge I would have to take up a lot of space to do coolers with enough room and dry ice to keep it all properly cooled.
- WyoTravelerExplorerRVd for 40 years and have always run my fridge on the road. I can say propane is a lot safer than it was 40 years ago. With all the sarety devices on the tanks. I actually watched a repairman change out a propane tank without shutting off the valve. If he had done that 40 years ago he would have been toast. When I asked him why he did that he told me that is how he always changed tanks. :S
