Refrigerator fans??

I recently installed two cooling fans in the outside refrigerator compartment to help keep the air circulating on hot days.

I purchased a Camco battery operated fan for the interior of the refrigerator, but it's really a piece of junk, so I'm considering adding a cooling fan, or pair of fans, that clips onto the fins, and wires into the light fixture harness.

What have you guys done to help keep the refrigerator cooler, and the temperature more even?

Thank you.

    The bungee cord idea...

We found that the doors on our Norcold are not stiff enough to fully seat the gasket on the corner opposite the latches. That would be at the top of the freezer door and bottom of fridge door. So we now use two gestures when closing the fridge: Reach up and smack the top corner of the freezer door; Knee the bottom corner of the fridge door.

Also on Norcold - Cooling shuts off about every 36 hours in an attempt to defrost. Shutting the fridge OFF for 10 seconds or so re-sets that 36-hour interval. I do that daily at noon, so it never gets to "defrost." We can go two weeks of beachfront camping before the frost gets heavy.
  • I bought the ones that are small double fans that clip on the fins on the back of the fridge and they work pretty good. I just clip them on and they run fairly quiet. I have had them for about 4 years now and are still going. Got them on Ebay.

Did you put them in for hot weather use? If so are you turning your fridge to colder when it gets hotter? The hotter it gets out the further to warmer is where you should be turning the temp control to, if you are setting it to colder the better chance you have of freezing the cooling unit. Setting it warmer allows the fridge to cycle more often while still keeping things cold in the fridge.

    WHAT :H
  • Rather than try to cut into the wiring, I bought two Valterra fridge fans, which run from a pair of "D" cell batteries for about 4-5 weeks, stuck one in the fridge part, another in the freezer. They don't move much air, but in such a small space, they circulate it enough to move the cold air at the bottom of the fridge around to keep things cool.

For fridges that are relatively narrow, like some tall ones in the Winnebago ERA and Travato 59G, I recommend two fans in the fridge compartment, one set lower, otherwise the cool air will just pool at the bottom.
  • The wall next to the frig gets quite warm. Should I set a fan to blow on the wall?
  • another big problem with the frig is the door gasket, I put a light duty bungee across ours and it really dropped the temp.
