Registration of a 2014 coach on a 2013 chassis

Hi All,

Our 2014 Thor Axis is built on a 2013 Ford chassis. We had both titles and the vin was the same for the Thor coach and Ford chassis. No matter how much we explained to our local tag office that there was no 2013 Axis, they still issued the tag to a 2013 Axis!! We are still trying to get this straightened out with them. Has anyone had a similar issue? Any suggestions, or is this usual?

Many thanks!!
  • Here in TN. My Ford chassis is a.2007 and the finished MH Winnebago is a 2008.
Title shows it as a 2008.
Used the Ford Vin# and the Winnebago SR# fir the completed MH.
  • I had the same problem in 2003 when I bought a 2003 Bounder built on a 2002 Ford chassis. The BMV was adamant about titling it as a 2002, I simply went to the dealer and told him my bill of sale indicated I bought a 2003 and the BMV says it's a 2002. Now it's up to you Mr. Dealer, either you set the BMV straight or you owe me the difference between a 2002 and a 2003. It is titled and licensed as a 2003. You do not reed a new VIN, this is really standard procedure for MHs at year switch over time. Get your dealer to take care of it.
  • Your vehicle is a THOR. Should have presented the Thor MSO to dmv and kept the Ford title for your info only. Probably can't get the bureaucrats to fix it now. Good luck!
  • The year of the chassis is the ultimate decider. That's just the way it works.
You will have no luck getting it changed.

The VIN is *not* under the control of the RV manufacturer. They cannot, and will not, change the VIN.

  • The VIN always matches the chassis. No where on my title does it even mention Thor. You have a 2013 motorhome as far as they are concerned.
  • Unless the manufacturer is willing to give you a new VIN, you're stuck with the 2013 VIN. Manufacturers can issue new stickers for a corrected VIN.
