Corollary: Resale value only matters if you are going to sell something. Otherwise, it's just a question of what is it worth TO YOU?
I have spent more on my van than I would get out of it if I sold it. I do keep resale value at least partly in mind -- I have saved the seats and trim pieces I took out, for example -- but mainly the money is from my entertainment budget, not investment. I imagine this is true for most folks here.
I would have a frank discussion with my mechanic about a 100k engine and tranny, though.
