Replacing factory installed pressure reducer

We have a 1998 Monaco Dynasty coach and the built in pressure reducer jammed up and shuts the water off. It's never been replaced. Not sure if this has been addressed before but the pressure reducer unit goes through a hole of a fiberglass panel so can't be removed without getting that panel off. I always use an external pressure reducer right on the RV water faucet so don't even need this built-in. any suggestions on how to get our water flowing again. Fortunately I'm able to trickle in enough water into our big tank using a bypass valveand and use the water pump to to provide us with water to shower, et cetera.

First.. The Internal pressure reducer (if you have one) is likely a sure flo.. It's a good unit (Division of Watts) and I give it about a 9 on a scale of 10
It should be mounted in a flange.. 3 or 4 screws and the entire flange comes off. It is sold Flange attached (or with a male hose fitting on the other end.. Mine as that kind) and is thus very very easy to repalce.. Remove screws. Pull it out a bit. Unscrew line from fitting. Reverse.

You say you use an external regulator (you can thus replace the built in with a standard inlet if you like.. Same procedure)

External come in a few designs
One is a cylinder. about 3/4 inches in diamater male end is normally molded as part of the body... JUNK there is a second one called "High flow" or "High capacity" also junk.

Valterra As I recall has an adjustable.. I've never used but hear good things from others. All 3 types appear on the page I will link to (The good one is like 62-53 bucks)

I used both a Watts and a Zurin Adjustable regulator (They look nearly identical) 3/4" with hose adapters.

    Watts Regulator

I give it a 10. in fact when I put a gauge on it's outlet and went from Static (Set to 50 PSI) to full shower flow.. The needle did not even wiggle.. Stuck on 50 (not stuck just the pressure never changed) that was on the Zurin.

Now these regulators do wear out (Pressure drops under flow) but you can rebuild 'em. For way less.

Finally As implied above Sure-Flo sells the same regulator normally installed but without the mounting flange and with a male hose adapter threaded on the output.. I got mine on "Closeout" so I have no clue as to price.
  • Are you sure it is a pressure reducer or is it a one way inlet valve?
