Jay, I agree that you will change the geometry and that last step may be to much. Check with an online catalog to compare the measurements. Then check the mounting bolt pattern, it cam be a real pain to change the mounting bolts. As near as I can discern, mine are carriage bolts and the heads are covered by the stair tread. To relocate the bolts would take a lot of work.
I have learned that good maintenance will keep them working well. I drew up a schematic for making a set of indicator lights to check the step location but I haven't had time to fabricate and install. Personally I think that indicators should be a factory installation for every electric step.
