Replacing Windshield Wipers

I have a split front window on my motor home. The windshield wipers do not cover the entire window surface.

Is it possible or even practical to try to replace the wipers? If we change the size, length, of the wiper blades will it be is necessary to change anything in the mechanical end, i.e. the wiper motor?

I'm okay with the way they swipe the surface just would like to have a tad more area swiped.

Also, I got new wiper blades for the winter and they seem to drag when going over the glass. What would cause that. It's almost like when in a car with the wipers on and there is not enough rain to wet the glass.

Thanks for the help.
  • Nothing ventured, nothing gained. I'd try the longer blades and see what happens. I figure the motor will be fine.
  • If you go too big put more load on motor. That said, the only way to see is step up. Most complaints are too big and too small. My were too small and I went up two inches. Been working fine for many years.
  • Funny, many people go smaller (28" vs. standard 32") due to cost of the blades, but I agree a slightly large area would be nice. Regarding the blades dragging over the glass, we have found the following to help:

    1) Ensure the windshield is as clean as possible. We find Rain-X not only reduces the time you need the wipers on (the water kinda beads and runs off in a light rain storm), but it seems to provide a smoother surface for the blades and they wipe better.

    2) Once the blades begin to age and rubber starts to dry out wipe them down with a rag and rubbing alcohol. Seems to soften the rubber and extend the life of the blades with no observed adverse impact.

  • Thank you all so much for the sage advice.

Next Spring when I take the ole girl out of storage I will try moving up a tad in wiper length. Suppose as long as the blades don't get hung up on the windshield center post all is good????

Another quick question....why does it appear to be so difficult to find a wiper blade assembly that will fit the wiper mechanism? Mine had to be special ordered. It was not like going to Wally World and buying off the rack.
  • I think it's simple economics. Not a big demand for wiper blades 32"+, so it's not worth it for most retailers to stock and supply. Last spring I found the best price at RV Upgrades:
