Rest Stop Shenanigans

Well, it happened today.

We were traveling back to Southern California from Las Vegas and stopped at a rest stop just before Palm Springs, CA. I pulled into the truck parking area and a guy was talking to a few people in the area. When he saw me pull in, he came up to my driver's window, which was open, and told me about a guy who had just won $180,000 at a casino and wanted me to come over to the truck a few vehicles down.

At first, I didn't understand what he was saying. I thought he said someone hit a motorhomes slide-out... (which didn't make sense).... as he was talking rather fast.

Once I realized what he was talking about, I remember reading here about this scam. I'm not sure how it works but I knew I wanted nothing to do with it. When I exited the motorhome to head towards the 'necessary' room, he thought I was going to follow him to the truck he mentioned earlier.

How many people fall for this? What would someone winning $180,000 at a casino would want from other travelers at a truck stop?..... money, right?

The guy tried several times to get me to come over to the truck.... I just ignored him.

Has this happened to you?

MM.
  • Never happened to us. Whenever we pull in to a truck stop, or anywhere else, everyone leaves us alone. :B
  • These bums are actually pretty savy on the easy hits. Sometimes they are wrong but usually not. If they think you're easy they'll push a little. They are just bums. You also find them at a lot of freeway off ramps. I guess it isn't so amazing but being a retired LEO they spot me in a minute. I never say a word but they never approach me. They are off to the next easy mark parked at the rest stop. You don't need any protection except be stern with them. They are just bums trying to con people.
  • Ah - the thrill of getting something for nothing combined with greed... but it's not just hucksters that know this about human nature - look no farther than the nearest politician.
  • Of course, I wasn't there but, you left your motorhome with this going on? You walked to the building? Think safety first!

I think the question should be: Why does anyone fall for this?
  • Mark, I would just tell the guy that I was born at night but, not last night! You did the right thing!
  • I think I would have called 911 and reported a possible scam in progress. Then I would have gone to the necessary room if necessary. At least a CHP unit might be dispatched in case the people decided to get pushy. In Calif there is no reciprocity for your CCW.
