allynnc, it is about fifty miles further but if you are going from OKC over into Arkanas near Fort Smith, you can go up the Turner Pike to Tulsa, then take US412 and the Cherokee Pike over to Springdale, AR, then I-49 south to Alma, AR, which is just on the east side of Ft. Smith and runs into 1-40 there. From my house it is 53 miles further but worth the trip and the pike fees. It is a much prettier drive and four lane all the way.
I lost several hundred dollars worth of wheel covers on a chassis on I-40 a few years ago somewhere over there and had to have my rig aligned when I got home from our trip. We love to go over to the great state parks in Central Arkansas in the spring and the fall. I had rather buy five or six gallons of gas than destroy my RV.
I don't think folks that have not driven that stretch of I-40 can really appreciate how destructive it is and what it can do to a vehicle. I have never seen anything like it for so many miles anywhere else in the country.
