Rigs that handle like cars in the wind?

High wind warnings have been posted the last few days for a large areas of So Cal. Driving on CR-V yesterday, wind was severe enough in some areas that even cars were slowing down. Yet a variety of RV"s were on the road. I know I've become overly cautious in the wind having been caught in unexpected storms occasionally in my 150k+ miles of RV driving over the last 3 decades. But even in conditions where I've pulled over & waited it out, I've seen others keep right on going. If you have a rig that easily handles winds like were predicted for So Cal this weekend, please share that with me. Might just be our next. I'd love to stop being so paranoid.
  • I have a 35' foot DP on a Freightliner chassis. So not the biggest of RV's, but much heavier than most gas rigs out there. A few years ago I was driving back to California from Utah going across the Salt flats in a storm. As I was getting close to Bonneville the crosswinds really picked up. I had slowed to about 30 mph because I couldn't keep it in the lane. At one point the wind actually pushed me into the fast lane even though I was turning the wheels to the right. I slowed to about 15 and got back into my lane, luckily traffic was very light. So I limped along at 15 until I got to the first exit I could find and got off and parked facing into the wind and waited it out.
  • My current toy hauler and previous 5th wheel handle severe winds pretty well. Might be all the tires on the pavement. Been in 40 mph crosswinds and never felt like we would lose control; always stayed in our lane just fine. Not saying we don't slow down with the rest of the traffic but have never felt the need to pull over and wait it out.
  • High profile vehicles are high profile vehicles.

That's why when the wind warnings come out they state dangerous conditions for high profile vehicles. Pretty much includes all MH's.

A's being the worse having a front end which is like trying to push a 4 x 8 sheet of plywood into the wind. C's have a slightly better aerodynamic front end but when all is said and done 'both' are high profile vehicles. You get a side wind and it WILL push it around.

I tried once to push through a windy storm with a Class C. NEVER again.
