Roadmaster base plate install is done.

In regard to my other thread about a week ago, I wanted to follow-up with how it worked out. I was looking for a good deal on a base plate.

I bought a Roadmaster base plate from etrailer and I installed it yesterday. Now I know why I love the Blue Ox but unfortunately, they didn't make one that fit my toad. I already had the Blue Ox Aventa tow-bar and I didn't want to change that so I bought the Roadmaster adapter.

The Roadmaster base plate is heavy duty but what a pain to install and a pain to get it ready to tow. The crossbar on the front makes it massive. During installation, everything didn't fit the way it should, the instructions were somewhat unclear, steps left out and some things were totally wrong. It was nothing major that a shadetree mechanic couldn't figure out but still a PITA.

Oh well, it's on, it's solid and I have confidence in it and that nothing will come loose.

  • Does Blue Ox not make various adapters for all the other base plates?
Not sure how many NSA READYBRUTE makes, but with my DEMCO baseplate, the proper adapters were shipped along with the tow bars.
At least for a Wrangler, I consider the DEMCO to be superb and like no other for looks and durability. With the way it's designed and for it to come off, the whole front of the Jeep's frame would have to be ripped off, bumper and all. All the bolts do, is keep it intact and have nothing to do with the towing strength.
  • I have installed Roadmaster on 4 different autos. First time took 6 hours the last only took three. I have found that their instructions to be very clear and complete. It takes much longer to wire the brake, turn singles and tail lights.

Regarding the reference to the cross bar, I remove mine when we are home at a location where we will be staying more than a couple of days. I leave the tow bar on the motor home and store the cross bar. Only 4 pins to remove. Very easy and simple.
  • This post is a perfect reminder of why it's a good idea to always see what the other guys are offering.

When I bought my Focus Roadmaster was the first to offer a kit so I bought it. I was very pleased with everything about that kit.

When I bought my Fusion BlueOx was the first one to offer a kit. I looked it over and decided if I had to hack my car up that bad to flat tow it I'd just go with a dolly. When Roadmaster released their kit I liked it a lot and installed it. That was 10 years ago and it's still working well today.

The next one I'll be towing is my F150. In looking at the offering from each they both seem to be about the same.
  • I installed the Roadmaster on my 2015 Cherokee LTD, the hardest part was the
peeling ,un-snapping of the cowling of the car. I have the one with the cross
bar, that will distribute the load to both sides. I was not looking for
attractive base plates, just solid build ones. I'm not a mechanic, but I can handle a drill and a wrench.

    Tinstar, what are you towing?

I can relate, I had to have the Roadmaster installed on the new MKX. I certainly like the ease of the Blue Ox but they didn't have a base plate for it.

The Roadmaster system looks clunky. I will remove it once parked as I don't want 'all that mess' hanging on the front of my new car!

    Safe travels,

Kia Spectra. I'm like you, the Roadmaster is unattractive and clunky, heavy and hard to store. I have no doubt it's safe but I sure like the Blue Ox better. It's funny that Blue Ox makes a baseplate for the Kia Spectra 5 but not the Spectra. On the other hand, Roadmaster's base plate will fit the Spectra or the Spectra 5.
