Roof renewal products

This has probably been covered many many times. I was looking at products you can paint on your roof to renew or extend the life of your rubber roof. Every ad had claims and counter claims. I asked folks at the RV place what they recommended, of course it was the product that cost the most “But it’s good for 5 years!” I was told. Well worth the money if it’s as good as claimed. Just like everyone swears by Eternabond for seam repair and patching, is there a roof coating out there that pretty much everyone thinks is a great product? One that stands out above the rest.

  • Geocritter,
Yes Sir, this topic's been around, on and off, for quite a while and, it's always a presidential debate. The long and short of it, some guys NEVER climb on their roof and never see the condition of it, some don't think anything has to be done to it, EVER! Some, do a yearly wash and that's it. Some, do more like wash, protect with many forms of products.

Long story short, our previous coach, a '99 Fleetwood Bounder 34V, had a deteriorating rubber roof, the EDPM version. Well, after about 6 years of ownership, and sitting directly in the hot, So CAL sun, that roof was almost completely BLACK, due to the fact that the white coating was just wearing away.

Well, after quite a bit of research, I finally decided on the Dicor product. It's a two part process. Here's the scoop. It was all done in one day!
    1. Wash with good soap and water and good brush, let dry.
    2. Apply "primer/prep" and scrub, then, "PRESSURE WASH OFF"!!!
    3. After that's dry, apply first coat of new coating, let dry
    4. Apply second coat of coating.

Now, that was about 5+ years ago an it looks as good today as it did the day we did it. No more black, no more streaks and, considerably cooler inside the coach due to a white roof, not solar black one. Now, that was way back then, there certainly could be more economical coatings out today.

  • After 19 years of my 5th wheel sitting in the sun it's time to look into coating the roof. Like you I have found the most expensive products are the ones recommended by everyone. These products are sold as solutions for RVs.

I started looking for products for recoating EPDM membranes and discovered Henrys Roofing products has a Cool White Coating (Henrys 280DC) for use on EPDM roofs. When you read the specs it sounds just like the Dicor, Eternabond and other "RV" coatings

Henrys also has a tape for repairs Henrys 297 as well as a sealant Henrys 288

It's a lot less expensive than the "RV" coatings. I plan to give it a try in a few months.
  • What does the manufacturer of your roof material recommend? There was absolutely no requirement on mine to do anything other than wash/inspect annually and keep the seams sealed. There are many of us that feel doing too much shortens the life span of some materials.
