Roof replacement is a "normal maintenance item"?

In looking for an RV, an owner I spoke with told me the roof on his 2011 Jayco 29' was replaced, along with the seals, last year. When I asked him what made it leak, he told me replacing a roof was a normal maintenance item. Really? On a 6-year-old RV?
  • Our 96 Southwind has the original rubber roof. Replacing it is not a normal maintenance item..
I would want to know why the roof was replaced. Check the RV for water damage.
  • Does the roof look replaced? A job well done? If so I would not worry about it. Maybe ask to see the receipt for a clue on what work was done and why. Some RV owners are a bit clueless and just follow dealer recommendations. Your judgement call if owner is hiding something but still the roof was replaced can't be all bad.
  • Not at all.
I traded in our 13 y/o RV and the roof still looked like new. He's lying to you.
  • they should last a lot longer that 6 years, maybe if a tree branch has damaged it i could see replacing maybe part of it ...
  • No, not a maintenance item. Rubber roof are warrantied typically for 12 years for defects. Replacement at 6 years because of an arbitrary requirement in someone's head is plain stupid. I think there were other issues and I hope you walked away from it.
