Like the OP said, I believe the escape hatches are for tip-over situations. I'm sitting in my RV now and looking around, the only quick escape if it were to tip would be the windshield or the rear window, which are 30-feet apart. If it were on its side, I'd need a ladder to get out of the side windows (which would then all be above me).
I'm about to embark on a Columbus Day Weekend excursion so I'd rather not think about it anymore :)
