DrewE, can't be too new a requirement, my rig is 20yrs old. I think passenger buses are required.
Hmmm...my motorhome is less than 20 years old and doesn't have a roof escape hatch, so it must not be a DOT requirement. I'm aware that passenger busses do need them (and have for awhile). I thought the only requirements for RVs were to have some means of escape from the bedroom--typically the escape window if there is no door there--and to have means of egress on at least two different sides so it could not be fully trapped by rolling over. Maybe there are more subtleties to the requirements for RVs than I'm aware of; for sure I have not done any thorough research into the matter.
I do have an exit window on the back of my motorhome, and of course the cab doors and the main side door...fairly typical.
Naturally, there's nothing prohibiting any maker form adding emergency exits that aren't required by law, and I certainly don't care to discourage their doing that. Getting out from the (then) top side of an RV in a roll-over would be less than straightforward, for sure, assuming there's still something of the RV structure left to get out of.
