Rusted Screws under Slide- question

After years of looking, reading and dreaming- we are finally about to pull the trigger and purchase our first RV. We are supposed to make our purchase on Saturday. There is one thing about the coach that my husband pointed out that I feel I need to ask about before we sign on the dotted line.
This is a 2013 Forest River Forester 3011ds- There are 2 screws at the base of dining table and one of them- the head of the screw is rusted.
And then underneath the slideout, there are screws and several of them (if not all, i don't remember) were rusted.
Is this a red flag? Something we should be concerned about and dig deeper or is this a common thing and no need to be worried?
Thank you!!
  • I almost bought a Class C I liked until I saw bolts all over rusted. They “prepped it” and when I got there I decided to buy another unit that day. Best RV move I have made.

It was the row of rusted screws under the slideout that were concerning me the most.

I know that a lot of good advice is given here, so I thought I would ask for some!!

What do you mean by "under the slide out"? Are you talking about under the trailer where water can splash up from the wheels when traveling in the rain? If so, a couple of rusty screws may not be that big a deal. If somewhere else, then perhaps it could be a reason for concern.

Oh yes, I would be more concerned about those!
But if they are exposed to splash (my slide is over the wheels) that row may be rusted jsut because of that. I would replace them with SS and sealant.

  • Not such a red flag. Could easily of had something spilled on it, like Coke, that will corrode it quickly.
I would check it closer for softness, mold, etc. but one rusty screw under a dining table wouldn't stop me from buying it.
  • How and where do I look to see if there are other issues?
  • Rust = water....has it had a leak, has it been flooded, many questions I would want to try to find the answer to before signing on the dotted line..Sometimes the problems seen are only the tip of the problem..good luck
