With a permit, you'll be just fine. The main thing to remember is not to drive too fast. Many RVers get in trouble by their excessive speed, which in turn makes it very dangerous for you when driving your rig / combination 80' footer. Be safe out there this Holiday weekend!
I have a 40 ft RV and will be pulling a 32 ft trailer. 80 ft total lenght.
Is that legal?
Only a commercial vehicle can get a permit, if using in business, and get all the things necessary for being commercial, it will work.
You will need to get a permit in every state you go thru.
You will need to get a permit for EVERY TIME you move. There is no blanket permit.
To be over length, or over width, you need to show WHY you cannot divide up the load into sections that are legal. - GlennLeverExplorer.............

Bucky welcome to the land of HOAs and old retired people with enough money to pretty much do what they want....I am older than most on here but some just won't admit that these motor vehicle laws are flawed in many ways. If you followed every single law and regulation concerning your motor home you would be camping in your driveway----wait, the HOA won't allow it in your driveway!!!!! Some people need to just get a life........flame on folks, I got to roll my over weight, overlength, wrong drivers license mess out of here to enjoy my weekend with a bunch of likewise folks......
Okay, so how long should trailers be allowed to be in your humble opinion? There is only one law in this thread that anybody has given any example of that is being actively enforced by anybody, and that is the 53' single trailer limit. And the only story provided about enforcement has been against the NHRA racers who decided they can have 56 foot trailers even though they knew good and well they were illegal in most every state. And they were warned in advance about the trailers and chose to ignore that warning and so the law got enforced on them. Please tell us the flaw in that law? Should there be a limit on how long a trailer should be? How about 60 feet or 70 feet? Sure they'll be knocking cars off the road and taking down the traffic signals every time they try and turn a corner, but we don't want any flawed laws to prohibit that. Heck how about just having a 100 foot long trailer and pull it behind my 75 foot long custom Toterhome? Would that eliminate those flawed laws? - prstlkExplorerOne point I have not seen here is liability. You can get away with over weight, over length, and no trailer brakes in most states as the cops have better things to do. Get in a wreck, even not your fault, even not serious, you are in deep menudo. Your insurance may even refuse a claim as the rig was not legal. God forbid the accident is both serious and your fault.....you can then kiss your world goodbye.
Ps we stared full time with a 20 ft enclosed car trailer. A real pib, went to a 4 down and not going back. - J-RoosterExplorerYour OK if you travel to Washington State, but you will have to stop at Port of Entry and get a over length permit. This permit will tell you where and what times you can travel. You will also need several over length placards.

Pretty much nails it. In addition, there may be some political holier than thou attitude mixed in as well.
The ONLY reason I mentioned anything about sportsman racers is because it was brought up like a rub your nose in it deal. Get this: A state targets certain motorists who are bringing a great deal of revenue into the state. And they nail them for anything including inches over the stated law. Let's use 65' for example, as it can be related to 65 mph easily. Who gets a ticket for less than one mph over the speed limit? How about 5 mph? Even that is pretty rare. Yet they ticket for ANYTHING over the allowed overall length. Sure that makes sense. It did NOTHING to make the roads safer and its only intention was a money grab. It hurt specific businesses as well. If that isn't profiling, I don't know what is.
Is 80' well over the law? Of course. And there is a chance he will get a ticket or worse IF he gets pulled over. If we really want to make the roads safer, maybe we should pull EVERY exemption that motorhomes get. Now 70 year old retirees can have fun with a CDL test as well as physicals and the expense that comes with all of it. I'd say THAT would make a bigger impact on road safety than busting overlength vehicles. - Skid_Row_JoeExplorer

Sounds like your don't give a rat's arse what anyone thinks unless they think like you...do what you want, where you want, just don't bch on here if you get caught.
You asked a question, you received lots of answers. NONE, ZERO, NADA, NOBODY said you would be legal. Yet you persist. At 80' you're NOT LEGAL in any State of the Union. Randy tried to give you a logical explanation and you blew him off. His post made absolute sense to me...just sayin...Dennis
Ummm...I don't recall ever being 80' nor asking anything about being 80'. Me thinks you are misplacing your anger. - GlennLeverExplorer
