RV Door Keys??

I recently lost my RV door keys and was in process of hving them replaced by GS service call to locksmith. My neighbor with a different model of Coach tried to open my door and low and behold it opened. I was tolds by a senior RV er that all RV door keys/Lock are universal and only the dead bolt is unique to a particular coach. I find this hard to believe -- any ideas???
  • But there are some RV manufacturers who do not use those cheap, all the same, RV keys. I can't even buy the blanks for my motorhome's locks at a RV store. Have to go back to the manufacturer or a locksmith. Hardware stores do not even carry them!
  • Probably not a big issue. I seldom ever use the door or cargo locks except when we sleep. No problems yet.
  • This web site sells replacement keys for most RV locks and explains how the various manufacturer's key systems work. They also sell more secure versions of locks, or you can have a local locksmith install more secure locks. Personally, there is not that much valuable stuff in out trailer, and if someone is going to steal something, I would rather that they get in easily, and they not destroy the door in the process ....RV Keys
  • The Entry Door key has numerous different combinations. The PROBLEM, is simple, they do Make "master" keys for the doors, that are ONLY supposed to be available to RV dealer/service techs. But, some dealers, when they have NO door key or it is lost, give the customer the "master". They do NOT tell the rv'er it is a master. Until he tries it on another door with the same model lock assbly. Compartment door locks are all the same as long as the locks are the same brand/model. The DEADbolt, either the RV type or the household type will have hundreds of different keys and there are NO masters for those. Doug
  • Yes, unfortunately it is true. Ditto for the cargo bay door locks.

Sometimes though, it can be a blessing.
  • Search RV key replacement and you will find about 6 key numbers being supplied for almost all locks. Some RV supply facilities keep a stock of these on hand for easy purchase. This just tells you how easy it is to get into your RV. My service facility recommended I search out a good quality lock replacement or invest in programmable lock replacement. I was just as surprised as you.
