RV leaking water while filling water tank???

Hi I have a 98 class C Jayco Eagle

When I fill up the fresh water it fills for a bit (say 1/4 full) then as its filling water starts leaking quickly under the RV. Not seeing anything leak in the RV.

thanks for any guidance on what to check ,the water leak is tough to pinpoint underneath but appears to be closer to where the kitchen sink / toilet area is. The water leaking is fresh though.

Not sure if there's a overfill valve etc I'm missing on the plumbing?

Thanks
Sean

  • There is a process called plastic welding, I have heard of. It's like taking a soldering iron and swiping across the hole or crack. That's oversimplified, but close. I would check the time fill, for sure, and see if you can find all drain/overflow tubes. I have a low point drain (hot and cold), a fresh water tank drain, and two overflow tubes. Make sure what oughta be closed is, and what oughta not, ain't!
  • When our tank fills, the overflow spits it out right on top of the propane tank. I figured some engineer at Coachman got extra points for dual-purpose fire suppression. :)

When we got our RV, the previous owner had mounted a shelf and brackets in the back storage compartment and -- yes -- had drilled right into the water tank. You might look around to see if there are any shelves/brackets/screws that look like recent additions. Maybe the guy who added our shelf had some practice runs. ;)
  • My fresh water gauge always reads very low. Fortunately I can see the tank and see the water level in it. I was told that if I added a little salt to the water, the gauge would read correctly. I never tried it.

The gauge checks for continuity between contacts in the tank. Good clean water has too high a resistance so the gauge reads low.

I'll bet the gauge reads wrong.

Thanks for the reply. I will empty the water and run a timed test based on capacity.

Any idea what kind of cost is associated with tank replacement?

    Thanks again

A tank replacement cost more than you really want to spend, if you don't absolutely have to, check all other options first.
  • Where is your tank, can you see it easily, mine is under the rear queen, I can see it by removing an access panel, when the gage says 1/4, is it actually full, is your tank drain open,(partially) or a low point drain?

  • Biggest question is can you trust your gauge. You need to know how big your tank is then using your fill hose time how long it takes to fill a 5 gallon bucket. Calculate how long it would take to fill the tank then with the tank empty start filling and time how long it takes to start leaking. If it leaks like you say at about 1/4 full then you most probably have a crack in the tank.
