My posts were more towards heavy usage, prolonged dumping and warm weather
If u have a large tank like mine,let it get 3/4 full in a warm climate
believe u me they can get pretty smelly if the winds blowing the wrong way when someone flushes and your vents/windows are open

I just use water.

I use the blue liquid, not sure if I need it, my waste doesn't stink, I eat properly.

Jim, with all due respect and I'm not arguing with you. However you answered your own question. When you flush the toilet, close the vent/fan. It's as simple as that. No odors will come out the toilet with a quick flush if the vent/fan is closed/off as the roof vent releases all pressure. It doesn't matter how full the tank is. When not flushing, the entire system is sealed (toilet) and the outlet valve is sealed... you're not gonna get any odors inside the rv.

Now if you hold open the flush valve, yeah, odors are gonna come up. But with a quick flush, you will get nothing or maybe just a quick whiff. Close the exhaust vent/fan and all will be well.

Also, if you're in the "process" of using the toilet, the current deposit may provide some unpleasant odors. I have found that if I use my heel to flush as I go.... no odors.

With the roof vent, it is designed to vent the vapors and gas build up in the tank. I have never in all my years smelled odors coming from it.....even when I'm up on the roof. If you smell odors outside, it will be coming from a leak or an unsealed sewer opening.

I understand what you are saying and I'm sure you firmly believe in what you're saying.....but, do an experiment and prove it to yourself. Next time before going camping, drain your tank and put several gallons of water in along with a cup full of some sort or soap (laundry or dish) and then drive to your destination. Once there, empty the tank and add a few more gallons of fresh water before using the toilet. Every time you do use the toilet, add water to the bowl prior to flushing and add a little more water to the bowl after flushing.



Try it. What do you have to lose.

Happy Camper for me as well. However, I can count using all fingers and toes how many times I have needed it in the last 20 years of full-timing.
I am of the "water and more water" club. Anything else is rarely necessary.
I do love these poop threads. They invariably cause a big stink!

Happy camper has worked well for me. There is no way an untreated black tank does not have an odor....simply not possible and you can easily tell those that do not treat when the wind is from the right direction.

One Tablet of Bromine for Hot tubs when tank is empty one more tablet if out more than three days.
Smells are caused by bacteria breaking down the effluent. Bromine or sodium hypochlorite stop bacteria growth.
Bromine is better in hot weather and warmer water

We use the blue liquid and have not had a problem.

Black and grey waste tanks have 'vapor barrier' installed
'P' Traps (water), Air Admittance Valves (mechanical), toilet bowl seal (water), toilet floor flange gasket (mechanical) and vent lines that go out top of roof.

Same kind of system a S&B uses..and no odors either.

If you can smell the waste tanks then something is not working properly.
Find it/fix it..instead of mask it with chemicals (then you just have chemical poop smell)

But that's describing a grey tank. A blank tank vents directly out the roof vent.If you care to read my post I very clearly described scenarios where you will, can and do get Blank tank odor
IF you seriously believe that a blank tank 1/2 or 3/4 full has no odor then your delirious. If you can smell the black tank its because
its getting filled up and 1) bathroom vent is open and its in the same vicinity as your roof vent or your sitting around the picnic table and theres a invertion(wind swirling) among 2 examples of several reasons that all can happen even though the blank tank is so called working properly
The worst times one gets wiffs out the vent is when its getting full and its breezy and hot out or when I have noticed it when dumping as it vents out the roof vent ihave got the odd wiff
all of this depends on how full the tank is. all of my experiences have been when the tanks more than 1/2 full
Grey tank I have not had such experiences but I leave my grey open
so no build up.Your not "masking" anything with holding tank chemicals
there sold and used for a very good reason

Speaking of odors and design, the newer pit toilets that BLM & the Forest Service have installed work pretty good. They have installed a large diameter black vent that heats up in the summer sun and pulls air out that comes in under the door. Works pretty slick, IMHO.
